Emerging Issues in Mining
International Organisation
The Issue
The organisation needed five in-depth studies covering different emerging issues in the mining sector.
The Approach
We conducted a large-sample stakeholder survey, an analysis of the content of NGO campaigns, a review of coverage of mining and metals in the global media, and consulted an expert panel of leading authorities on mining issues. The results highlighted several significant global shifts in the mining sector, such as the increasing intensity of resource nationalism. In a second stage that added further value to the project, we shared the results with key personnel within the organisation and collected their responses. Placing an assessment of challenges and internal responses to those challenges side by side gave the client a unique picture of how the organisation regarded the issues raised by the five initial studies.
The Result
The client used the workshop at which we presented our findings as the basis for establishing an agenda of future research needs.
South-east Asia Country Operating Risks
International Mining Company
The Issue
An international mining company needed to assess the risks of operating in a country in Southeast Asia.
The Approach
We helped to coordinate and conduct a one-day workshop looking at the political, social and security risks of operating in the country. Experts from our network with a diverse range of backgrounds submitted short briefing papers structured around key issues, and we presented these to the client in a highly interactive workshop. The post-session report summarised the most important topics and recommendations to emerge from the session.
The Result
The workshop resulted in an informed and in-depth discussion about the client’s operations and strategy in this market.

The Approach
We provided a report on a broad range of topics, including demographics, biodiversity, non-governmental organisation activity, the role of artisan miners and logistical security. The report combined in-house research with analysis by a local expert in Chile.
The Result
Our report increased the client’s understanding of reputational risk in the region and informed its wider strategic decision making process.
