Global Green Growth
A European government
The Issue
A European government sought to realise the growth potential of the transition to a ‘green economy’ by bridging the gap between policy, capital and technology through an annual conference.
The Approach
We acted as a strategic advisor to the government in designing and developing a green growth initiative. We also helped the client to approach potential strategic partners and provided intellectual input to the sector working groups that have been developing key themes for the inaugural conference.
The Result
The client is holding the first annual high-level conference in October 2011. It will bring together 200 global leaders working for green growth in governments, global corporations, investment banks and NGOs.
New Paradigm for Economics and Business
A large food company
The Issue
A large food company wanted help in using the concept of sustainability as the cornerstone of its socially and environmentally responsible business practices.
The Approach
We provided an analysis of the philosophical and moral underpinnings of economic systems that included alternative, non-market based systems such as the 'gift economy', 'Buddhist economics' and 'green economics'.
The Result
Our study was used to launch a multi-year, ongoing rethink of the client's approach to doing business. Initially, the study helped to frame the agenda of a high-level conference on how to integrate social and environmental concerns into business strategy. Subsequently, our client developed a strategy for becoming one of the leading companies in this field which is currently being implemented across its business units.
Sustainable Malting Barley
An international beverages company
The Issue
An international beverages company needed to assess the long-term availability of malting barley and the implications of possible shortages for its supply chain.
The Approach
Our analysis considered the impact of trends such as climate change, growing demand for biofuels, genetic modification, agricultural policies and trade, and the availability of water resources for agricultural production. We presented our results at a workshop with the client, where we also evaluated supply chain implications and discussed strategic responses that could be put in place quickly to lessen the effects of future shortfalls. The final step of the project was a scenario planning exercise to assess future outcomes and devise the best plan of action for the client.
The Result
The client is now reorganising its supply chain in the light of a new understanding of the forces that affect it.
The Indian Renewable Energy Market
A European renewable energy company
The Issue
A European renewable energy company was considering whether to expand its operations into India.
The Approach
We produced a study examining the market for renewables in India that covered wind, biomass, small hydro and biofuels. The study assessed the political, economic and regulatory environment surrounding the renewable energy sector in India before evaluating its prospects. It also provided an analysis of recent developments in the country’s electricity sector.
The Result
The client subsequently signed an MOU with a major Indian energy company to explore further cooperation.
Clean technology
CMS
The Issue
A European provider of legal services needed to decide whether or not to invest in the development of clean technologies.
The Approach
We analysed the impact that clean technologies, or ‘cleantech’, will have on a number of key sectors in Europe. These include passenger and freight transportation, real estate and construction, agrichemicals and water management, and the waste management sector. Drawing on our expert network, we examined the key regulatory and technological drivers of the development and take up of cleantech among businesses operating in these sectors.
The Result
Our report was publicised widely and helped to raise awareness of the new legal issues that may arise as a result of the growth of clean technologies. It also enabled our client to highlight its cutting-edge capabilities in assisting companies that faced such actual or potential legal challenges.
